WRT the Leeds game, I remember my teacher asking if there were any West Ham fans. I was only one (deepest Gloucestershire). He enthused over Johnny Sissons, said he was 'one for the future).

I assume that 7-0 was never televised which is a shame. So many great games we will never see. It always bugs me that the 85/86 season there was a TV strike and half of McAvennies goals were never on tape. Typical West Ham luck, they go for the League Title and there was a bloody TV strike!!

I only ever saw Budgie ‘play’ on one occasion, that was in the Wally St. Pier testimonial in 1975. However, he was so fat that he hardly moved out of the centre circle all match.
With regard to Leeds, weren’t we just one of four teams who beat them in the 1973-74 season when they only lost 4 times prior to winning the league? I remember a sunny 3-1 win at about Easter time at the Boleyn.

Met a guy recently who was in the reserves at Palace in the 60s. Reckons Budgie Byrne was by far the best player he ever played with and a good bloke too boot

As a nipper Budgie was easily my favourite player. For his pre-match warm up he'd come over to the chicken run and perform a fantastic range of keepy-uppys. He was a real entertainer.
And for three or four years he had a fantastic twin-striker partnership with Sir Geoff.

I think he only lost once more, but only 1-0.

Seems like a lifetime ago but bumped into him at Butlins in Minehead, he was with his kid(kids) and was a really nice guy to chat too. Imagine any of the current lot going there for holidays, most not fit to clean his boots!

Revie said he was coming down for a draw. We had beaten Fulham 6-1 the Saturday before. But the memory i have is Byrne chipping over their defence and Bovington putting it over the bar from under the bar.

I also was there that night Helmut. Jack Charlton at a later date said that Budgie was the hardest player he had to mark in his career. No one who attended that game will ever forget it. The sight pf Budgie juggling the ball in front of big Jack before lobbing it over Jacks head for Hurst to score is my stand out moment of watching football for over 70 years.

From the book 'They played with Bobby Moore' - Ron Brett was killed in a car crash in 1962 in Clerkenwell. He was accompanied by his friend and ex teammate West Ham goalkeeper Brian Rhodes who escaped with cuts and bruises.
